  • Into the Future

Because I’ve wasted so much time with pointless babbling, I have had no time to create books of photography and of special holidays, yet I have wasted ten percent of my working day in inanities. So, no more. No more drivel. No more wasted time and a re-invigoration of my creativity.

Through contact with event organiser “The Whisky Experience”, I arranged a photoshoot for Scottish folk music band Càirdeas at the Hotel Schweizerhof in Lucerne. • Alien abduction

That was the idea, anyway. I’ve been inspired by Nick Turpin’s street shots, using high, undiffused strobes, and have been experimenting on and off with the technique. This is a shot from this evening in the woods near my home, which uses a single flashgun on a 3 metre stand out of shot to the

  • Week 13 of 52

A complete accident which worked out well. Slightly out of focus, misaligned, and the second flash didn’t fire because I was blocking the optical sensor. I like it, though. Strobist info: 1 speedlight on 1/16 power off-camera left (high). Background illuminated by feathered spill from the single light. Sepia toning and vignette courtesy of Adobe

  • One of those laptop shots

A work colleague, backlit by the sun coming in through the window, flash laid on keyboard and bounced from laptop screen at 1/8 power to give f 2.8 at ISO 100. Fill-in flash from camera right at 1/1 power (losing 2 stops due to diffusion). And a little bit of dark vignette added during post-processing

  • Bleached

This is one of those shots which just seems to work, despite the fact that it came about purely by accident. Well, mabye not by accident, but not in a planned way. It was taken in the bathroom of a conference centre near Zurich at the end of October, when I was shooting the conference

  • Thanks so much to everyone who turned out yesterday on the ETH campus in Zürich, for a great afternoon’s photography, teaching and learning how to effectively use off-camera flash and achieve both dramatic and interesting portraits. A surprisingly and gratifyingly high number of photographers attended – almost 20 in the group, if I remember correctly

We’re planning on separating into a couple of groups, with one or more experienced strobist photographer/s with a group of people eager to learn. We’ll set up a couple of shots, explain the lighting setup and then

  • Tea Dressing

I bought Jo this dress last weekend. It’s lovely; a modern tea dress reminiscent of years gone by. Jo’s figure and style is greatly flattered by dresses like this and where it comes and goes from fashion listings (so I’ve read: don’t think for a minute that I have any idea of women’s fashion), Jo

  • The Autofriedhof (car cemetery) is an extraordinary collection of rotting cars, dumped by a spare parts salesman on land behind his workshops since the 1930s in Kaufdorf, between Thun and Bern. The cars, in varying stages of decomposition, have remained untouched since they were abandoned in the woods and are now mainly collapsed hulks. The
