Long Days on the rails
Published in
I received a letter from my new employer today, detailing the first weeks of my employment and lots of interesting sessions they have planned, from “getting to know you” time in the office in Bern to “an hour with the CEO” at the Zürich office. Starting on my first day, I have meetings and sessions
Dark Interior, Pompeii, Italy

Jo makes her way interestedly around one of the few semi-intact rooms in the ancient ruined city of Pompeii.
The editors are currently voting amongst the range of wonderful pictures you’ve submitted for issue 3 of Swiss Peeks, which will be entitled “Reflecting in Switzerland”. We’re pleased to be able to announce the theme for the following issue 4 as “Multicultural Switzerland“. The theme descriptions in English, German and French are now online.
Are you interested in and knowledgeable about Strobism? Do you write fluent French? Can you write well and are you interested in helping other photographers based in Switzerland to learn how to improve their technique and extend their knowledge? Can you spare a little free time each week to write for a new blog about
Dog Shooting, Pompeii, Italy

One of those perfect moments, when time seems to slow down and the photograph almost takes itself. A photographer taking a picture – “shooting” – a sleeping stray dog through anti-dust netting in Pompeii.
Auto Cemetery, Kaufdorf, Switzerland

The Autofriedhof (car cemetery) is an extraordinary collection of rotting cars, dumped by a spare parts salesman on land behind his workshops since the 1930s in Kaufdorf, between Thun and Bern. The cars, in varying stages of decomposition, have remained untouched since they were abandoned in the woods and are now mainly collapsed hulks. The

I am inspired once more to pull my finger out and start putting photographic books together. One of them will be a series of shots of the Niesen, which I see as this view every day from our sitting room window.
Newspaper publishing in today’s online world
Published in
I joined a newspaper company in 2001 to help maintain and develop a newspaper CMS system, which the development manager began creating on his own in 1994. In the past seven years, we’ve brought in web browser interfaces, RSS feeds, AJAX data handling, online publishing tools which allow the output to be sent direct to

A man, tired, carries his daughter onto the train as she rests her head on his shoulder and sucks her thumb. The train picks up speed and the man stands, resting from the waist on a suitably padded bench, with the girl half asleep and his back to the adjacent window. With each sideways rocking

With Alpnachsee, Vierwaldstättersee and Stans in the distance. A risky photo: to get the right angle, I needed to climb through the fence and sit on the edge of the rocky cliff face.
There’s more to life than photography

There are times, now and again, when I wonder what the point is in taking photographs. I mean, there’s all the expense of buying equipment and maintaining it, there are all the hours spent editing and refining the images until they’re just right. Then, what to do with them? Post them on Flickr. Make a
Lütschine Valley, Switzerland
Published in
Not the best day to head up to the Alpine Garden on the Schynige Platte above Interlaken. The view, apparently spectacular, was somewhat shrouded by cloud today. The backdrop to this scene is the Lütschental valley, coming down from Grindelwald. Strobist info: one strobe on full power at camera right, fired by Cactus trigger.
Leaving Capri, Italy

This was one of the most challenging shots of our trip to Italy. Making my way through the crowded upper deck on a fast, bouncing boat travelling over rough seas, to make it down the rearward-facing steps and onto the small platform at the rear of the boat, above the engines. Wedging myself into the

Things are a little quiet photographically, as I’m working on the hundreds of photos I took in Italy at the end of May. However, I have managed to make progress on the photography section of my website, where new galleries feature much larger versions of photos posted elsewhere. Amongst them, the Portraiture gallery, featuring a
Back from the Amalfi Coast

My photos from Italy are coming online over the next few days at Flickr, where each image is accompanied by a small narrative. One of my favourite memories of the whole holiday was sitting at the bus stop on our way back up from the beach, after dinner. The hill up from the sea front,
Capri, Italy, 1999

Jo and I are on holiday next week, in the beautiful landscape around Naples. Here’s a flashback to 1999, when I was there with an old friend and travelling companion.
Nikon upgrade

Jo’s become increasingly interested in animal photography and because of the restrictions which her Fuji camera have imposed, she’s been using my D70 with a telephoto lens. Sadly, whilst we were out at the animal park in Bern this past weekend, the Fuji gave up the ghost altogether. So, time for an upgrade. After much
