The two “half-cantons” of Obwalden and Nidwalden are in the geographic centre of Switzerland, reached via the Brünig Pass from canton Bern or via a branch off the main Lucerne-Gotthard motorway from the east. The half-cantons are pure historic Switzerland: be it due to their geographic location in the Swiss heartland or due to the fact that they formed the original region of Unterwalden, from which one of the three “Eidgenossen” (Swiss founding fathers) came.
