As the previous post for April went down well, I thought I’d work backwards and start adding a few new little galleries of photos to show what I’ve been up to each month. Here’s March 2022 in pictures.
I was keen to do more winter hiking this year, and although winter seems to have flown by, I did manage to get out into the snow more often than in previous years. Most recently, we got the big cable-car up from Grindelwald to Eigergletscher with the intention of then getting the short train connection…
The hike from Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg, high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland, is beautiful. But parts of the route are an absolute killer.
High in the Swiss alps, the Aletsch glacier, various mountain climbers’ huts and the Sphinx observatory all seem to be impossibly high above the real world. However, the statistics for 2015 from the Jungfrau Railway show that they’re not as far from the everyday world as they feel.
A steep and stony path from the mountain hamlet of Kleine Scheidegg leads to the top of the world-famous Lauberhorn, from which the intrepid author gets an unparalleled view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
…and where better to realise a childhood dream than in the Swiss Bernese Oberland? U.K. band Rudimental chose to film a large amount of the video for their recent release “Free” (featuring Emili Sandé) in the Alps of the Jungfrau Region and not only is the song lovely, but the accompanying video sequences are sublime.
The Jungfraujoch station, tourist destination and meteorological research centre sits on the “saddle” between the Mönch and Jungfrau peaks. It’s been a hectic week and weekend, hence the delay in posting that I’ve released my 2010 calendar.
Last weekend, we chose to head for the Eigergletscher (“Eiger Glacier”) station high above Grindelwald: to appreciate the astounding beauty of the autumnal landscapes below the station, to be enthralled by the massive cliffs of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and also to visit the polar dogs who are kenneled next to the station.
