  • Proper Sledging

Jo and I go sledging in subzero temperatures from Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald, along a hairpin 7.5 km route through the forests beneath the north wall of the Eiger.

  • A winter weekend

In January of 2005 – five years ago this week – Jo visited me in Switzerland for the first time. These photos show our wonderful time together.

  • Jo learned to ski in Scotland when she was younger. After living here for several years now, she decided that it was about time to give cross-country skiing another try and give me my first shot at trying, as I’m not keen on regular skiing and had never tried cross-country before.

  • Letham in the Snow

We spent much of the Christmas and New Year break in Letham, a small town in Angus, Scotland, where Jo grew up. Just after New Year, we took Archie, the family dog, for a walk around the town and Jo showed me places from her childhood as the evening set in and more snow fell.

  • An autumn stroll around the Ballenberg open-air museum with Jo’s parents.

  • My wife Jo in our hotel room during a trip to Flims (canton Graubünden) on our second wedding anniversary.

  • Steam train Strobist

Werner Rolli organized a special steam train event near Solothurn last weekend, and I was able to help out by publicizing the event through the usual Swiss Strobist channels, as well as attend the event and get some photos myself.

  • Love of my life

You know how the saying goes: behind every good man stands a great woman.

  • Outtake

An outtake from a photo shoot with a friend this weekend; Jo and Katrin on the shores of Lake Thun at Neuhaus, near Interlaken.

  • New legislation means that pretty much every air travel passenger must submit their personal travel documentation – passport information – before arriving at the airport.

  • Complementary

Jo poses for an unusual night-time portrait in Spiez.

  • Jo takes a break on our walk along the lake to Faulensee from home.

  • The date for the next Swiss Strobist photographic meetup in Lausanne (Switzerland) has been selected.

  • There’s always something about visiting the NPG. I am always driven ferociously to take photos instead of appreciating everyone else’s.

  • The only one for me

My light in the darkness, who has more patience for my photographic madness than I could imagine in a thousand dreams.

  • Thanks so much to everyone who turned out yesterday on the ETH campus in Zürich, for a great afternoon’s photography, teaching and learning how to effectively use off-camera flash and achieve both dramatic and interesting portraits. A surprisingly and gratifyingly high number of photographers attended – almost 20 in the group, if I remember correctly…

  • Tea Dressing

I bought Jo this dress last weekend. It’s lovely; a modern tea dress reminiscent of years gone by. Jo’s figure and style is greatly flattered by dresses like this and where it comes and goes from fashion listings (so I’ve read: don’t think for a minute that I have any idea of women’s fashion), Jo…

  • I’ve decided to blog about our wedding and honeymoon trip from Switzerland to Scotland and back again and this is the first entry.

  • I’ll be photographing a band in Bern at the end of next week with a couple of friends and so Jo and I headed to Bern last weekend to scout out some locations. We headed for the lower, older part of the city below Kornhausplatz and wandered down through Rathausgasse, stopping off at St. Peter…

  • Jo makes her way interestedly around one of the few semi-intact rooms in the ancient ruined city of Pompeii.

  • The Autofriedhof (car cemetery) is an extraordinary collection of rotting cars, dumped by a spare parts salesman on land behind his workshops since the 1930s in Kaufdorf, between Thun and Bern. The cars, in varying stages of decomposition, have remained untouched since they were abandoned in the woods and are now mainly collapsed hulks. The…
