7 videos in 7 days

For those who may have missed out: one of those meme things went around on Facebook and I posted a favourite video per day over 7 days. 1. Stipe and co. in 1993, with reminiscences of So. Central Rain in their video for “The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite”. 2. Eminem as superhero? MTV’d feel so lonely without him. 3. A favourite song…

Cable cars, funiculars and cog railways

Walking in the mountains is a great pastime, even if the weather isn’t great. But sometimes, getting to a mountain peak is a huge effort: even lesser summits than the four-thousand-metre monsters in canton Wallis are difficult to reach on foot. Although Switzerland is famous for its cable cars, funiculars and mountain railways, Switzerland Tourism doesn’t hold back when promoting…

Google Translate App

Mind: blown. The app isn’t anywhere near as snappy or as accurate as the “fun” promotional video would suggest, but it does optically recognize text in a foreign language of your choice and translate it live for you on your smart phone screen. The translations are a bit hit-and-miss, but if this kind of technology is already available for free…

The Great Escape

A lovely idea from Graubünden Tourism. Set up an interactive video advertisement in Zürich’s main station, showing what a beautiful part of the Alps you could end up in by just getting on a train. Then invite passers-by to join you by printing them a free ticket on the spot. (And wait for the initiative to spread across the internet like wildfire.)…

20 days in Antarctica

Kalle Ljung and his father spent 20 days sailing through Antarctica last winter. They took a GoPro HERO3+ Black Edition mounted on a DJI Phantom 2 Quadrocopter with them, and this is the wonderful, beautiful film they made. (Hat tip: Habi.)…

Helvellyn with Mark Richards

Helvellyn – the third highest peak in the English Lake District and therefore the third highest in England – has long been a goal of mine. The peak draws me much more than the higher Scafells, with a famous ascent via the rocky and precipitous Striding Edge and what must be a breath-taking view from the top. Ever since I…
