The Susten Pass is an alpine route which allows travellers to cross the mountains between canton Bern in the north and canton Uri in the south. The modern pass road, which winds its way up from Gadmen and from Wassen in a long series of zig-zags, was first opened to traffic in 1945. It was the first such road to be built specifically for vehicular traffic.
