The Niesen is the Hausberg (home mountain) of the Spiez communities, at the head of a range of mountains separating the Simmental and Kandertal valleys. It stands apart from the surrounding peaks and, as such, has a clearly defined, high, and distinctly pyramidal profile.
When the sun is low in the sky – primarily from autumn until spring – the mountain casts a long shadow across the landscape around Lake Thun. Quite spectacular when looking down from the summit, when the triangular shadow is plainly visible.
