Swiss Peeks retired

The Switzerland-based photographic community book project “Swiss Peeks – Switzerland Through Your Eyes” was retired at the beginning of October 2008. The three issues published between 2007 and 2008 will remain available for purchase in the Blurb online bookstore, but will no longer be actively promoted by an editorial team. Security threat

Not a great photo, but I’m posting it in order to wind up a security guard and highlight the photographic policy in the Wellgate shopping centre in Dundee. Moments after taking this, I was accosted and asked what I was doing. This photo is dangerous material, as I could’ve been taking this shot of the
Flickr Strobist meetup, ETH Hönggerberg (Zürich)

Thanks so much to everyone who turned out yesterday on the ETH campus in Zürich, for a great afternoon’s photography, teaching and learning how to effectively use off-camera flash and achieve both dramatic and interesting portraits. A surprisingly and gratifyingly high number of photographers attended – almost 20 in the group, if I remember correctly
Fireplays

Things are a little busy at the moment, so I’m much more able to consume than create. That said, this video-like time-lapse slide show of long exposures would definitely inspire me to take photos, if it weren’t for the fact that I feel uncomfortable around sparklers. My recent purchase of my own “travel card” – namely, the Swiss national travel pass – will allow me to travel across the whole of Bern, photographing all of the tram stops in the BernMobil network.

We’re planning a day/afternoon of photography on the ETH Campus at Hönggerberg in Zürich, on Sunday 21st September. We’re planning on separating into a couple of groups, with one or more experienced strobist photographer/s with a group of people eager to learn. We’ll set up a couple of shots, explain the lighting setup and then
Dream come true

When I was in my late teens and early twenties, I dreamed of becoming a band photographer. I couldn’t imagine being stage-front because of the regularity of the shots, but more a portrait photographer; taking bands out and taking photographs of them looking moody in grotty locations. Thanks to Dan and the rest of the
“Good” photography

I had an interesting chat with a friend of Nick‘s on Saturday evening, which brewed into quite a heated discussion about the perennial photographic question of what makes a successful picture. Clive questioned my point of view that I am able to achieve perhaps five or more good photographic images out of every 100 taken
Learning a lot, a little at a time

This is a short (ten minute) outtake from David Hobby‘s workshop DVD set, which is on sale for US$139. The price seems steep for “just” a DVD, but reconsider: what you’re actually getting isn’t just a film, but an in-depth tutorial over eight DVDs (over ten hours of content) which has the potential to seriously

The editors are currently voting amongst the range of wonderful pictures you’ve submitted for issue 3 of Swiss Peeks, which will be entitled “Reflecting in Switzerland”. Are you interested in and knowledgeable about Strobism? Do you write fluent French? Can you write well and are you interested in helping other photographers based in Switzerland to learn how to improve their technique and extend their knowledge? Can you spare a little free time each week to write for a new blog about
There’s more to life than photography

There are times, now and again, when I wonder what the point is in taking photographs. I mean, there’s all the expense of buying equipment and maintaining it, there are all the hours spent editing and refining the images until they’re just right. Then, what to do with them? Post them on Flickr. Make a

A great piece of news for breakfast this morning: issue two of Swiss Peeks, entitled “The Red Makes It”, has been chosen as publisher Blurb’s coveted “Book of the Week”. We’re so chuffed, on behalf of all those who have worked together and contributed to Swiss Peeks. Allison writes on the Blurberati Blog that the
