Lake shore and boardwalk at Etang de la Gruère

I worked on a project for Microsoft back in 2009 to build a voting website, through which the public chose the default background image which was to appear on all Swiss computers running the (then) new Windows 7 operating system. I also got to review and filter the submissions before they went to voting.

Although the voting chose an image of Säntis by Daniel Bolloff, a different photo of Etang de la Gruère near Saignelégier in the Swiss Jura mountains caught my eye, and I made a note to visit one day. That one day came, at last, nine years later, on our annual trip to a pretty Swiss location to celebrate the Swiss National Day (1st August).

The immediate impression I got on arrival was how similar the small lake is to Loch an Eilein in Scotland. From the scots pines and peaty earth to the stillness and the pleasant path around the lake. We had a lovely time and will definitely be returning – not just for photography but for a little bit of the Scottish Highlands in Switzerland.
