Faulhorn

Faulhorn

This historic mountain-top hotel, which dates back to 1830, can only be reached on foot, which makes it pretty unique. Hikers set off from the cable-car station at Grindelwald First for a twelve-kilometre round trip or trek across the long mountain paths from Schynigge Platte, and the hotel marks the start of the longest sledge run in Switzerland in winter. The mountain owes its name to the crumbling black calcareous slate, also known as “rotten rock”.
