Posts about Zürich
Zürich is the largest city in Switzerland. The city sits at the northern end of a large lake of the same name, and has a very international nature, thanks to a booming financial and business-centric nature.
The non-holiday holiday
Published in
After some rushing around, I find myself on my own in Zurich for a couple of days. After dealing with the day job, I have the evening to myself, with no pressure and no responsibilities. Leaving work behind, I head for the old town and the anonymity of a familiar, traditional and noisy restaurant. The…
A bit OCD
Published in
Because I’m a bit OCD and because I have an eye for design, I’ve always thought how appealing a high street could look if the store fronts on high streets were matched. It looks as though the architects of Zurich’s newest main station shopping concourse have the same view, as the logos and frontages are…
Frauenbad am Stadthausquai
Published in
Bathing in public was forbidden to the women of Zurich until 1837. Once the ban had been lifted, the city constructed a bathing house on the river Limmat, alongside the Stadthausquai next to the city hall.

Toni-Areal, Zurich

I am rarely in Zurich and I prefer the countryside and mountains to cities these days. But I like to be in the midst of industrial architecture sometimes, and one of my favourite sites is the former milk processing plant in the industrial area of Pfingstweid. Mainly because of the huge corkscrew ramp leading up to…

It’s been a while now since I’ve led a photo workshop. But Pascal from the Photo International Club Zurich asked nicely earlier in the year and so we found a weekend which would work out for us both.
Portraiture on location: course in Zurich

Now that the weather is turning fine again, it’s time for a new photo course. I’m collaborating with the Photo International Club Zurich to run an all-day course on my usual topic – portraiture and lighting on location – on Sunday, 11th May in Zürich city.
Mint choc chip at last!

After more than twelve years in Switzerland, there are few foods or drinks which I miss from the UK. Kenco (instant) coffee is a regular buy when we’re in the UK and we also stock up on pain killer tablets when we can, as prices in Switzerland are astronomical in comparison. The biggest pleasure which…

Wedding portfolio update
Published in
I’ve been prompted recently to update my wedding portfolio; in particular since I’ve begun using Flickr as an extension to the image archive for this website. I’ve added three new groups of photos over the last couple of days: from Interlaken in 2011… …from Lindau in summer 2012… …and from Zurich in December 2012.
“Keep It Simple” portrait meetup

It’s been a while since my last photo workshop and so it’s definitely time for another! I’ve spent a lot of time over the past year getting used to a simpler workflow and getting used to my Fuji X100 and since doing so, I’ve constantly been reminded how easier and how much more fun it…

On this grey weekend, I’ve continued with extensions to the website by adding a new gallery page for photos from Zurich’s Street Parade.
The Blue Hour

The time between sunset and complete darkness is known in photographic circles as “the blue hour”.
I was at the Street Parade dance festival on the streets of Zurich again this past weekend. This first set of photos shows some of the participants of the floats, as they wait patiently to take their position in the parade which leads through the centre of the city.
Portraiture day at the MFO-Park
Published in
Our workshop day this past Sunday was a great success, after the rain passed away from the MFO Park in Oerlikon some ten minutes before we started! Blazing sunshine soon warmed the area and gave us plenty of light to work with, so the day was spent mainly working with a mixture of natural sunlight…

After a break of almost two years, and a handful of small lighting courses both on location and in the studio, I’ve decided to organize another free day of photography and learning in the style of the Swiss Strobist days.
