Posts about Interlaken

Interlaken is a town in the mountainous part of the Swiss canton of Bern. It is an important and well-known tourist destination in the Bernese Oberland region of the Swiss Alps, and the main transport gateway to the mountains and lakes of that region.

The town is located on the Bödeli plain between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and straddles the river Aare. For the more pedantic visitor, only the centre of town is Interlaken. What outsiders see as Interlaken is, in fact, the combination of the parishes of Interlaken, Matten, Unterseen, Bönigen and Neuhaus.

Lee Dong Gun out of favour

Once stood prominently in front of a prestigious jewellers on the main shopping street in Interlaken, aimed to bring in more Korean customers, this cardboard cut-out of a famous Korean actor and musician is now relegated to the loading bay at the back of the store.

Neuhaus and the Dreigestirn from Beatenberg

"Dreigestirn", literally translated, means three stars. This is a name often accorded locally to the famous three mountain peaks at the centre of the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland: the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

Open air studio

After trying out the lighting technique I mentioned yesterday, of a large diffused light source right above the subject, I wanted to apply the technique to an outdoor location. When we set up the shots under cover in Interlaken (but outside), the first problem was that there were no suitably white walls to hand. If you ever find yourself in this situation, there’s an easy solution: simply expose your shot for the person you’re photographing and then over-expose the background of the shot by at least three stops.

Setup using one strobe (1/8 power) mounted behind a large white umbrella, high camera right, and one undiffused strobe at 1/1 power behind Stéphi pointed at the wall behind her. The huge over-exposure of the background turned the concrete wall – which you can see in the darker shots in the series – completely white. […]
