Casa la Reginella, Positano, Italy

Our home for the week, a first floor room looking eastward along the Amalfi coast. The blue tiles were welcome after long, hot days, as they remained cool to the touch. The air conditioning unit in the room was also very welcome, though it my have contributed to a slight cold I had when we […]

Bit Bumpy, Li Galli, Italy

The high speed boat from Positano to Capri was running despite choppy seas and the half-hour trip was very bumpy. The cabin was full and despite the rough ride, with plenty of spray, no-one on the way there was looking green. In the background of this shot, two of the Li Galli islands, whose vicious […]

After Sunset, Positano, Italy

The main part of the town, on a steep south-east-facing slope. Our hotel for the week was about two-thirds of the way up the hill, ensuring plenty of healthy walking up from the beach each evening.

Fornillo Beach Day, Positano, Italy

Another special moment of the holiday: Jo’s first time in the Mediterranean. An unusual experience, to swim in warm sea water, when your previous experience is the North Sea off the coast of Scotland.

Modernity, Positano, Italy

While many things about the Amalfi coast are old and out-of-date, the memorial candles in the church of Santa Maria Assunta certainly aren’t. Powered by battery, their glow in darker corners is static and warm.

Santa Maria Assunta, Positano, Italy

I make a point of visiting the largest local church whenever I go somewhere new. Though not quite the scale of St. Peter’s in Vatican City, which I visited ten years ago, the larger of the churches in Positano is nonetheless beautiful and exquisitely decorated.

Style, Positano, Italy

Some of the fashions in Positano and the surrounding area make you pause to wonder what decade you’re in. These Tom Selleck-a-likes are definitely at least fifteen years old, as they feature in an old holiday programme on the BBC, which we see occasionally at home.

Pots, Positano, Italy

Two further items for which the Amalfi coast is famous are pots and lemons. Here, combined in the form of… pottery with painted lemons!
