The time between sunset and complete darkness is known in photographic circles as “the blue hour”. By photographing night scenes while there is still colour in the sky, the overall effect is much more pleasing to the eye than the same scene featuring a black sky. That’s why you’ll see more experienced landscape photographers out with their tripods at this time of the evening than at night time.

The views from the immense vineyards along the northern shore of Lac Léman (Lake Geneva) are pretty spectacular, no matter what time of day. At dusk, in early summer, the lights of the town of Vevey and Montreux twinkle in the distance, while the lanes amongst the vines are all but deserted.
