Thunersee (Lake Thun), Switzerland

Lake Thun (German: Thunersee) is an Alpine lake in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. It takes its name from the city of Thun, on its north western shore. The lake is fed by water from Lake Brienz to the south east, which lies 6 metres higher than Lake Thun, and various streams in the Oberland, […]

After a long weekend of walking (and several years’ service), my trusty walking shoes are in dire need of replacement or repair…

Alien abduction

That was the idea, anyway. I’ve been inspired by Nick Turpin’s street shots, using high, undiffused strobes, and have been experimenting on and off with the technique. This is a shot from this evening in the woods near my home, which uses a single flashgun on a 3 metre stand out of shot to the […]

Week 13 of 52

A complete accident which worked out well. Slightly out of focus, misaligned, and the second flash didn’t fire because I was blocking the optical sensor. I like it, though. Strobist info: 1 speedlight on 1/16 power off-camera left (high). Background illuminated by feathered spill from the single light. Sepia toning and vignette courtesy of Adobe […]

Jo in the studio

*Sigh* Strobist info: diffused flash through white umbrella at camera right (1/8 power), undiffused strobe behind Jo (high left, 1/16 power), background illuminated by flash on the floor, fired through a red plastic tupperware bowl onto a plain backdrop (1/4 power).

Snow in Spiez

Snow in Spiez

At work, we needed to buy both a point-and-shoot video camera and a new stills camera, so, on my advice, we bought a new Nikon D90 which can fulfil both requirements.

Winter vines

I’m loving taking shots with my new 50mm/f1.8 lens. The incredibly shallow depth of field is just great. (View this one larger to see what I mean. Also looks great on a darker background.)

Niesen, Bernese Oberland, Switzerland

The Niesen is a mountain, located in the Bernese Oberland region of the Swiss Alps, overlooking the lake of Thun and is often called the Swiss Pyramid. The summit of the mountain (2362 meters) can be reached easily with a funicular from Mülenen (near Reichenbach). The construction of the Niesenbahn funicular was completed in 1910. […]

Week 2 of 52

The first "proper" set-up self portrait I’ve taken in absolutely ages. I have to practice and I anticipate that this "52 weeks" project will be a good self-training exercise in portraiture.

Worth getting up early for. I left home fifteen minutes before I needed to and took this before heading for the train station in Spiez.

Silent Night, Spiez, Switzerland

Not our road, but the newer residential complex behind our building. Taken in complete silence the other night, as snow fell and I stood vigilant with tripod and umbrella. Part of my personal Review of My Year 2008, now on Permanent Tourist. We’re off to England on Wednesday, so stay tuned for updates from there. […]
