Photos from the collection road trip 2010

Keswick, Cumbria

Off to the Lake District next week for a few days. I’m not expecting miracles, but weather like this would be much appreciated.

Colour me impressed

OK, OK, I know: I’m a city boy at heart. But I defy anyone to be less than impressed when rounding a corner on a lonely road in the Scottish Highlands at dusk to be confronted with a hillside covered in red deer does and stags.

Cnoc Fyrish, Alness, Scotland

Looming over Evanton on the Cromarty Firth is Cnoc Fyrish and the strange construction on its summit is the Fyrish Monument. The construction was the brainchild of Sir Hector Munro of Novar, who had it built in 1792 to provide work for the unemployed during the time of the Highland Clearances.

Stoer, Scotland

A little house by the beach in a very quiet corner of Scotland may look idyllic, but I bet it’s a different story altogether when the temperature drops, the wind picks up, and the winter storms arrive from the arctic and from the north Atlantic.

Ardvreck Castle, Sutherland, Scotland

A shot which took a little patience to achieve; waiting for around quarter of an hour until the solitary patches of sunlight passed across the loch to strike the castle. Just out of shot to the right: Archie running back and forth and enjoying the wind whipping across the water.

Loch Awe, Scotland

Heading towards the north western coast of Scotland, the landscape quickly becomes devoid of anything except a single road and a single line of wooden telegraph poles leading between the solitary farms. However, there are occasional parking places – no doubt due to the number of tourists who travel through the area – and we […]

Kyle of Sutherland from Wester Fearn

I’m always driven to visit unusual or notable places and so when Jo and I arrived in Scotland on our road trip this summer, one of the places I wanted to take a day trip to was the far north western coastline. Despite unpromising weather at the outset, we set out from Alness, on the […]

MS Oriana IV, Invergordon

We were lucky enough to be at Invergordon on the Cromarty Firth in Scotland, when this huge cruise liner was preparing to depart. I shot a time lapse sequence over the course of twenty minutes or so, as the dock hands freed the ship and it headed out along the firth to the North Sea.

Whisky Water, Cairngorm

I love the water in the Scottish highlands. It looks as though the whisky, which is made from this water, comes straight from the ground and into the glass. Eagle-eyed viewers will also notice my new logo embedded into this photo, which has been professionally designed for me and which forms a part of the […]

Glenmore Forest from Cairngorm

I’m returning to photos from our road trip this summer at last. This shot is less than sharp at full resolution (despite the use of a weighted tripod) due to the sheer power of the wind at this viewing point near the top of the road to the Cairngorm ski lift in Scotland. This was […]

Royal Scotsman, Aviemore, Scotland

We had the luck of the devil while we were in Scotland; not only did the weather hold sufficiently long enough for me to get good photos every day we were there, but we also had a couple of great chance encounters. The best was at Aviemore, a tourist town in the Cairngorm mountain area, […]

Loch Garten, Cairngorm, Scotland

A wind strong enough to make the tripod wobble and cause big waves on the surface of the lake, in the middle of the Abernethey Forest in the Cairngorm area of Scotland. We were there to visit the Osprey Centre, which was just as interesting but the birds were too far away to photograph with […]

Loch Garry, Scotland

The drive up the A9 main road from Perth to the north of Scotland is a great experience, although one which demands much patience as progress can be slow. Despite being the main route between northern and southern Scotland, the main road remains a single carriageway for much of its length. Reaching the Drumochter Pass, […]
