A short break and brief drone flights above the farmland in the sunset near the highest point of the UK motorway network.
After enjoying a walk in Oxfordshire earlier in the day, and having learned the importance of doing some exercise when spending a lot of time in the car, I broke my journey between the south of England and Scotland four and a half hours after leaving Godstow in October. Heading up the M6 in England, you pass through the dramatic and expansive landscapes of Cumbria and pass over the one of the highest points on the UK motorway network at Shap.
I’d stopped at Tebay services for an early dinner and felt like enjoying some fresh air again: a gentle walk to the top of a small hill seemed to fit the bill. The sun was golden and low in the sky, casting long shadows, so I pulled off the road and parked up near the motorway exit, slung my drone bag over my shoulder, and went for a wander. Despite the rush of plentiful traffic travelling up and down the motorway half a mile away, I was alone in the landscape and free to enjoy the birdsong, breeze and the vague noises made by sheep in the adjacent fields. My feet were still sore and so I took it nice and slow, walking up the gentle ascent of the road and stopping off to take some panoramic images with my phone.
Although I’ve been to the nearby Lake District many times over the years, I’d never been to this particular spot and so it was refreshing to see some new views of a part of the county I love.
