Visiting the church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields adjacent to Trafalgar Square in 2014, I tried to gain the attention of a church warden who was bustling by. She responded huffily and impatiently, showing plainly that she had no truck with tourists.
“Did you know that there’s a dead rat at your feet, here at the end of the aisle?”, I asked.
She jumped a mile.
