Oberhofen Castle

I understand the need and desire for traditional areas to build using new ideas and modern architecture. But the person who dropped this concrete box onto the castle grounds at Oberhofen seems to have ruined the castle out of spite. I wonder why, in striving to move into the future at such a great rate and leave the traditions of a grandparent’s generation behind, that bare concrete seems to be so beloved here.

The view of the castle from the ship landing stage is still pretty spectacular though, despite the defacement of the castle’s lake-facing aspect. Take a stroll in the beautiful gardens while you’re here: they’re free to enter although dogs must remain outside the gates. Outside the castle grounds, the path continues along the Wichtheerpromenade – historically a vineyard, but latterly a park and sports facility with uninterrupted views across Lake Thun to the Stockhorn range, to Spiez, and to the higher mountains: Niesen, Blümlisalp, and beyond Gunten, the uppermost reaches of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
