Don’t do speculative work for web clients

In web and creative industries, clients often expect you to provide designs and solutions before agreeing to a budget. This is known as “spec(ulative) work” and it’s a plague. Why should clients expect it of creative workers, when it’s clearly a ludicrous suggestion in almost every other industry?

Would you invest your time, experience and effort to do your job when there was a potential that your client or boss wouldn’t pay you for it? No? Then don’t expect us to. It’s an insult.

If only we could react in the way the cook does in this video. That’s how we all feel, but we just can’t show it.
