I visited the English Peak District for the first time this autumn and was much impressed. After many years of visiting the dramatic Lake District, a little further north, I’d been worried that the landscape would be tame in comparison, with gentle hills instead of dramatic mountains. What I found was a different landscape for sure, but one which is just as beautiful and dramatic. Heather and bracken hark back to favourite places in the Lakes and in Scotland, whilst walks are less challenging than on bigger mountains, but by no means easy and definitely equally rewarding.
This view of the Ladybower Reservoir from Bamford Edge has entered my list of favourite views, and I look forward to returning to the district again to explore more of the “Edges”: rock-lined hilltops overlooking beautiful valleys, lakes, reservoirs and villages.
