As is customary every October, Jo and I packed our bags last week and headed away for a short break to celebrate our double anniversary – relationship and marriage on two concurrent days. This year, we chose to return to our favourite hotel in the U.K. – the Waterhead Hotel at Ambleside in the Lake District.
After a long-overdue purchase of some new hiking boots, we christened them on part of Loughrigg Fell – a comparatively easy walk up from Pelter Bridge via Fox Ghyll and Sheepfold to Todd Crag – overlooking Lake Windermere and Ambleside town – then back to the car via Lily Tarn and Miller Brow. I had been many years ago and wanted to photograph a similar view down across the town during this visit. It was not to be, thanks to the arrival of thick fog and driving rain when we reached the viewpoint, but we thoroughly enjoyed the walk anyway. We treated it as a wet warm-up for the following day, when we were to head for the bigger fells of the Western Lakes.
