Through the mists of time

The older I get, the more I come to recognize the way in which my photographs aid my memory. This is borne out by the way in which I can scroll back through my Lightroom catalogue of digital photos – currently topping 61,000 entries on two external hard drives, with more to be added from DVD backups – and be reminded of places I’ve been or things I’ve seen, which would otherwise have been lost to the mists of time. This photo is an example: a sailboat in the distance under beautiful conditions on Lake Brienz, photographed in 2004, is not that unusual. However, it’s one of the first photos I ever took with a digital SLR, and the quality of the image led me to subsequently buy my first dSLR: a Nikon D70.
