Ever since I was little, I’ve been calling flamingoes “pingoes”. I don’t even know why; probably a childhood thing of muddling up the name with their colour. Anyway, it was amazing to see wild ones for the first time in the lagoons in the Camargue region of southern France recently; the photos aren’t great, but the memory makes up for it.
