I’ve been a fan of Bern band Choo Choo ever since meeting lead singer Dan a couple of years ago. Their pop style caught my ear and they liked the shots I did for them back in 2008, so we have organized a couple of shoots since then; both individually and as part of a meetup for the Swiss Strobist group in 2009.

When the band were looking for a photographer for some new shots in June of this year, I was happy to step in and work with an art director to shoot the raw images for their website and new promotional material; the final result of which is the header image on the band’s new website. I was proud to be asked and it was a good opportunity to work to realise someone else’s ideas for a change: receiving direction to create images which they had come up with. The new images go together with a slightly different musical direction which Choo Choo are promoting with the upcoming release of their new album; the first single is already online and available to download from the band’s website for free.

As a part of the shoot, I was asked to create some individual head shots for the band, so I set the camera to motor drive, pointed my camera at each of the band members in turn, and asked them to pull a load of silly faces. Four of the resultant photos were chosen for official use and I have worked on my own favourites from the remainder to put together this small selection of alternative portraits. Once the main shots were in the bag in each setup, I also tagged a few personal shots onto the session, my favourite of which is the lead image in this article.

It’s A Good Thing
