A traditional wood fire oven in the centre of an old Swiss farmouse. Such a unit, functioning as a heater, would’ve been placed in the middle of the house to provide the whole building with heat throughout the winter, as well as firing a small oven on the side of the main unit. These are still evident in many old houses, particularly in alpine areas, and are beautiful in their construction with perfectly polished tiles inlaid with small relief sculptures.
