I worked with the Brienz Dramatic Society in 2005 on a local theatre production of Jeremias Gotthelf’s play Ueli der Chnächt. As the shows were taking place in the adapted cinema in Brienz, the director decided to use projected images to act as backdrops for each set piece, so he called on me to provide suitable photos. I chose to visit Emmental, where the play was originally set, and arrived at dawn to spend the morning photographing as many traditional views as I could find. The series of photos proved harder to realise than I’d initially thought, as although many of the farms in the valley are very old-fashioned, there are few views which contain no modern features at all.
