Lower Chapel, Flüeli-Ranft

The Lower Chapel at Flüeli-Ranft was built between 1469 and 1501, after the number of pilgrims to the original ("Upper") Chapel in Canton Obwalden (Switzerland) increased. The rear wall of this newer chapel, alongside the river in the Ranft gorge, is covered by a large and detailed fresco in a similar style to the imagery visible in this photograph. Bruder Klaus (Niklaus von Flüe) spent the last twenty years of his life during the 15th century as a hermit in the gorge in personal spiritual crisis, after living for fifty years as a respected member of his village.
