Pisa, Italy, 1998. The two ladies in front are American and part of a much larger group, who were chattering away behind me. I was standing in the doorway of the Baptistry, waiting for the rain to stop, and watching the photographer in the centre of the picture taking large-format shots of the "Field of Miracles". (His trolley is laden with a tripod and a large format camera in its hard case.)

I shot this from waist height on Ilford FP4 film, at aperture f8, using the depth of field scale on the camera lens to ensure that the women were in focus. They had no idea that I was taking the photograph, which is why I managed to get this shot without them looking at the camera.
