Anyone who hasn’t been living in a jungle over the last couple of weeks will know that Britain, along with the rest of northern Europe, has been heavily blanketed with snow. Big disruptions in transport networks and the day to day life has been severely affected, whether in the far north of Scotland or the busiest parts of the English Midlands or south coast. The trip which Jo and I made over Christmas and the New Year was plagued by disruption from the start and previous experience with travelling to the airport in Edinburgh during winter conditions prompted us to ensure we were there the night before our flight home, staying at the new Travelodge alongside the airport perimeter.

On our way back to Edinburgh from Angus, we stopped off at Kinross to see the impressive expanse of Loch Leven, frozen and covered with snow. The castle on the island in the centre of the loch was a prison for Mary, Queen of Scots in 1567/8, before her dramatic escape and enforced abdication.
