Lorraine Bridge, Bern, Switzerland
The Lorraine Bridge connects the city of Bern with the Lorraine quarter. Built between 1928 and 1930, the bridge was opened to allow pedestrian and non-rail traffic to cease over the iron-built “Red Bridge”, which was subsequently dismantled after rail traffic was diverted over the newer Lorraine Viaduct. This view east from the train on arrival at Bern’s main station is particularly picturesque in clear weather, when the distant Alps are clearly visible in the distance. The concrete bridge partially collapsed in the late 1940s when work on a conservatory in the Botanical Gardens, below the bridge, caused four of the bridge supports to fail.
