Thunersee (Lake Thun), Switzerland

Tuesday, 14th April 2009 • Switzerland galleriesNo comments

Lake Thun (German: Thunersee) is an Alpine lake in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. It takes its name from the city of Thun, on its north western shore. The lake is fed by water from Lake Brienz to the south east, which lies 6 metres higher than Lake Thun, and various streams in the Oberland, including the Kander. Lake Thun was created after the last ice age and was originally part of Lake Brienz. The historic combined lake is called Wendelsee (”The Changing Lake”) by geologists and historians. Passenger ships have operated on the lake since 1835 and there are currently ten passenger ships in total, operated by the local railway company BLS Lötschbergbahn.

Selve Areal, Thun, Switzerland

Monday, 5th May 2008 • Friends and Family, PortraitureNo comments

We were in Thun this past weekend, with a couple of friends from Zürich who’d come down for a day of “strobism” (the art of non-studio-based photography using portable flash units for illumination). As well as locations in Spiez and Gwatt, we sneaked into the dilapidated Selve area in Thun, where old factories, once converted to clubs and go-kart tracks, are now mainly smashed to bits and awaiting demolition. It was an uneasy feeling being there, surrounded by broken glass, ripped-up concrete and evidence of less than salubrious nightlife, but it was an interesting photographic experience.

Jo did particuarly well as our model, being “out of her element” (her words), and this shot – one amongst many – is the proof that our trip there was well worth the effort.

Along the lake shore path at Gwatt are homes perfect for twitchers: this area is separated from the Thunersee by large reed beds full of nesting birds.
