A photo I took a year ago today reminds me to put down the lighting gear and head out with just a camera and a pair of comfortable shoes, to capture the light which needs no help.

Experiments in HDR

Saturday, 3rd April 2010 • Geek stuff, Individual photographs, Landscape photography, Technique2 comments

I’ve been meaning to spend a little time to sit down and really get to grips with the High Dynamic Range editing process. For the unititiated, the HDR is a photo which contains detail within a much wider range of tones than is possible through an individual shot, from deep shadows to bright highlights.

Into another world

Friday, 2nd October 2009 • Landscape photography, Switzerland galleries5 comments

Last weekend, we chose to head for the Eigergletscher (“Eiger Glacier”) station high above Grindelwald: to appreciate the astounding beauty of the autumnal landscapes below the station, to be enthralled by the massive cliffs of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and also to visit the polar dogs who are kenneled next to the station.

Niesen, Bernese Oberland, Switzerland

Wednesday, 4th February 2009 • Landscape photography, Switzerland galleriesNo comments

The Niesen is a mountain, located in the Bernese Oberland region of the Swiss Alps, overlooking the lake of Thun and is often called the Swiss Pyramid. The summit of the mountain (2362 meters) can be reached easily with a funicular from Mülenen (near Reichenbach). The construction of the Niesenbahn funicular was completed in 1910. Alongside the path of the Niesenbahn is the longest stairway in the world with 11,674 steps, which is open only once a year to the public for a stair run.

Storm Approaching

Wednesday, 30th July 2008 • PhotographyNo comments

This is a rapidly conceived and executed shot, as a big storm headed in from the Simmen valley from western Switzerland. I saw the distant clouds being illuminated by lightning (which accounts for the varied colouring in the clouds) so I grabbed a tripod and framed my shot from our living room window, setting exposure and taking a couple of test shots. I was pretty happy with the shot as it was, particularly with the streelight area giving some foreground interest, but the picture was a bit heavy in the lower part of the frame. So, I grabbed a flashgun, set it to 1/4 power and fired it into the trees in the lower centre of the frame, filling in just enough light to bring a little detail into the image.

You can see a larger version of this photo in the Niesen gallery.

Walking on the Lake, Oeschinensee, Switzerland

Saturday, 23rd February 2008 • PhotographyNo comments

The weather has been glorious today and, though we didn’t get going until a little later in the day, we spent the latter part of the afternoon riding the chair lift from Kandersteg to Oeschinensee, then walking through snowy forests to the side of the lake. It was a long walk along the sledge run, to a large, frozen, snow-covered plain. Tiny, stick-like figures ventured out in the shade of massive cliffs to the centre of where, in summer, Jo and her brother rowed a small boat on turquoise water.
