Lake Thun (German: Thunersee) is an Alpine lake in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. It takes its name from the city of Thun, on its north western shore. The lake is fed by water from Lake Brienz to the south east, which lies 6 metres higher than Lake Thun, and various streams in the Oberland, including the Kander. Lake Thun was created after the last ice age and was originally part of Lake Brienz. The historic combined lake is called Wendelsee (”The Changing Lake”) by geologists and historians. Passenger ships have operated on the lake since 1835 and there are currently ten passenger ships in total, operated by the local railway company BLS Lötschbergbahn.

It's been a very busy time since we returned from Scotland, which has meant that there hasn't been much time for photography. I had to work late last night, leading me to driving home with a company car, which allowed me to drive along the fast road between Interlaken and Brienz early this morning on my way back in to work.

I've been meaning to take this shot for years, but it's a tricky one. Finding a tiny emergency breakdown layby, crossing a busy, fast three lane road, standing on the hard shoulder at the edge of a flyover bridge as traffic thunders past, and away before the police turn up. I was on the road early enough this morning that there was no traffic worth mentioning, so I took my chance. This image - at full size, a stitched 24 Mpx photograph - is the result, and I'm chuffed.
