After trying out the lighting technique I mentioned yesterday, of a large diffused light source right above the subject, I wanted to apply the technique to an outdoor location. When we set up the shots under cover in Interlaken (but outside), the first problem was that there were no suitably white walls to hand. If you ever find yourself in this situation, there’s an easy solution: simply expose your shot for the person you’re photographing and then over-expose the background of the shot by at least three stops.

Jungfrau Zeitung secures its newspaper business

The newest version of the newspaper, to which I still subscribe online despite no longer working or living in the catchment area, produced by a small handful of people and covering purely local news instead of falling to the temptation of reporting news from more distant regions, is at least a match for – if not better than – most national newspapers.
Thunersee (Lake Thun), Switzerland
Tuesday, 14th April 2009 • Switzerland galleries • No comments
Lake Thun (German: Thunersee) is an Alpine lake in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. It takes its name from the city of Thun, on its north western shore. The lake is fed by water from Lake Brienz to the south east, which lies 6 metres higher than Lake Thun, and various streams in the Oberland, including the Kander. Lake Thun was created after the last ice age and was originally part of Lake Brienz. The historic combined lake is called Wendelsee (”The Changing Lake”) by geologists and historians. Passenger ships have operated on the lake since 1835 and there are currently ten passenger ships in total, operated by the local railway company BLS Lötschbergbahn.

A man, tired, carries his daughter onto the train as she rests her head on his shoulder and sucks her thumb. The train picks up speed and the man stands, resting from the waist on a suitably padded bench, with the girl half asleep and his back to the adjacent window. With each sideways rocking movement of the train, the girl’s head bounces with a varyingly gentility against the glass. She does not protest and he does not notice.

At Long Last

It’s been a very busy time since we returned from Scotland, which has meant that there hasn’t been much time for photography. I had to work late last night, leading me to driving home with a company car, which allowed me to drive along the fast road between Interlaken and Brienz early this morning on my way back in to work.
I’ve been meaning to take this shot for years, but it’s a tricky one. Finding a tiny emergency breakdown layby, crossing a busy, fast three lane road, standing on the hard shoulder at the edge of a flyover bridge as traffic thunders past, and away before the police turn up. I was on the road early enough this morning that there was no traffic worth mentioning, so I took my chance. This image – at full size, a stitched 24 Mpx photograph – is the result, and I’m chuffed.
Switzerland hit for six by storms and floods
Thursday, 9th August 2007 • Photography • No comments
Torrential rain has hit Switzerland in the worst storms since the heavy flooding experienced two years ago. Sirens sounded the alarm in several parts of the country on Wednesday evening and more than 100 people were evacuated from their homes as rivers and lakes came close to bursting their banks. [...] In canton Bern, the water levels of the lakes of Thun, Brienz and Biel [are] just short of critical. More »
